For two of many reasons, it's a big book carrying big ideas. It starts with a mystery spinning from Egyptian technology and Greek philosophy and then launches into our computer age. An ultimate hybrid, methinks. Complex and tricky to read?Not so. It's surreal in parts and historically fact-based in others. Mosttimes with a bit of both. It entertains, informs and dramatizes in ways which make this a very readable read. Dialogue, action, historical events and some very far-out ideas ranging from scientific to spiritual swirl together with a never-ending plot which virtually explains...
Everything. The here and now, the before and hereafter; what was (even incorporating the turn of the Century World's Fair, women's' rights; even men's too. And on and on. Then too, a tour of mankind's progress with stops to meet - in fascinating, imaginative profiles - those who powered our kind's progress.
I found myself taking notes, looking up things to corroborate; it was sort of a treasure hunt for facts, turning points. Facts and fiction spun together for entertainment and education. Quite an accomplishment. I haven't had such edifying fun reading since my early days of reading John Barth and Thomas Pynchon.
(Forgive my rave enthusiasm, I never expected a first-time writer to pull off something this good. It's a very big book in many ways; very smart, very human, very other-worldly, very true to history. I look forward to reading it again and again. Very Highly Recommended for smart, imaginative readers.)

If you like intrigue and challenge, you'll love this novel. It has twists and turns created by a master.
I am looking forward to many more novels by this ingenuous author.
First the Breaking Dawn series and now this. This is a terrific, well written tome about time and souls. That's all I'll say except from the moment I picked it up, I was absoolutely enthralled and, didn't stop until I finished it. Brilliant.
Thrilling, uplifting and inspiring all at the same time. Riley combines remarkable insight into the human condition with sprightly and involving prose to make this a real page-turner. Once you start it, be prepared to be up all night reading. You won't be able to put it down!
This isn't just a book....it's an experience! It captured my imagination and triggered a flood of emotions. The book is so exquisitely written that I lost myself in its intrigue, adventure, history and romance. "Gifts" is itself a gift... for it's given me a perspective on life and eternity that will continue to provoke contemplation and spark discussions with my friends -- all of whom I've told to make Gifts their next read!
